Early learning in Poowong.
Located next to the Poowong Maternal and Child Health Centre, our kindergarten has educated and cared for local children since 1972.
Our educators are passionate about nurturing your child’s strengths, interests and abilities as we work with them to foster their physical, social and emotional learning.
We will support your child to build relationships with their peers, develop their communication skills, decision making and resilience.
Our goal is to nurture happy, healthy children and inspire a lifelong love of learning.
Our centre
We place a strong emphasis on outside activities such a climbing, cycling and gardening to improve your child’s motor skills. Our kindergarten features:
- Planned indoor spaces
- Large outdoor spaces
- Undercover deck
- Wheelchair access ramp
- Sand pit and mud pit
- Trees, natural shade and shade sail
- Gardening beds for herbs and vegetables
- Play area with climbing equipment
- Swings
- Bicycle track
- Cubby house
- Equipment for climbing, skipping, throwing and catching
- Water tank.

Learning experiences
We carefully plan opportunities for outdoor nature-based play and creative indoor activities. Our programs are focussed on being fun, informative and collaborative.
Caring for the environment
Caring for the environment is a big part of our kindergarten’s approach. We will encourage your child to foster a love for the environment through our sustainability activities. We even have solar panels on the roof of our cubby house. We will encourage your child to:
- Recycle materials and water
- Develop everyday sustainable practices, like composting.
- Maintain our worm farm
- Interact with our guinea pigs.
Family and community connections
Poowong is a small, tight-knit community. We get involved in local activities to help your child interact with community members and develop a sense of belonging. We participate in the Poowong Dairy Expo. Community members, groups and services we regularly engage with include:

We encourage you to take an active role in your child’s early learning experience. You can join us in:
- Celebrating significant cultural festivals and days
- Talking to the children about your job, hobbies or other interesting topics
- Volunteering your time to support our programs
- Assisting with fundraising
- Our Parent Advisory Committee (positions are elected at the annual meeting of our kindergarten parents).
Languages
We participate in the Early Learning Languages Australia program. Children in our four-year-old program learn Chinese through apps on iPads. Time on technology is carefully monitored by educators. We support children’s language and literacy through our kinder lending library and book gifting programs.

Hi, I’m Lisa and I’m the Early Childhood Teacher at Poowong Uniting Kindergarten. I’m a mother and grandmother and am part of a dairy partnership with my husband, who has been a dairy farmer for over 30 years.
I’ve worked in early learning for over 30 years, 20 of which have been at Poowong Kinder.
Over this time, I have seen many changes to early learning and continually adapt with the times. The kinder team have worked to build Poowong Kinder as welcoming, progressive, and genuinely caring about and nurturing children’s learning and development. Every child we have the privilege to work with will have the best opportunity to reach their full potential and have a positive and fun experience at kinder.

Health and wellbeing
Mental health
Our educators are trained in various programs to support the mental health of your child and are skilled in working with children who have experienced challenges and trauma. We also offer mental health support for families if you find yourself in need of assistance.
Nutrition
We teach children about the importance of healthy eating and nutrition. At our kindergarten, we:
- Grow our own fruit, vegetables and herbs
- Accommodate all dietary requirements
- Teach food safety
- Work with families and carers from a range of backgrounds to ensure cultural foods meet the necessary requirements.
Safe environment
As a child safe organisation, our educators undergo regular working with children’s and police checks. We are focussed on delivering learning and development in a safe and supportive environment, so you can trust that your child is in good hands.
