St Andrews Sunbury Kindergarten is a welcoming centre which is dedicated to nurturing the growth and education of 3 and 4 year old children.

Children make sense of their social worlds by engaging actively with people, objects and environments.

Located next to Sunbury Uniting Church close to Sunbury’s town centre, our educators organise many walking excursions to places such as the library and local Country Fire Authority station.

To showcase our facility we have created 3-D Virtual Tour with a dollshouse view and a highlight reel.

Learning Experiences

We participate in lots of fun and engaging experiences promoting personal learning and development. We also encourage recycling and everyday sustainable practices. With local excursions and workshops covering a range of stimulating topics and activities, children have countless opportunities to open their minds to new and exciting people, places, and ideas.

We love visiting the local schools and having visits from the Responsible Pet Program, the dentist, Western Water, animal trainers and the police.

Health and wellbeing

We have a strong focus on healthy eating and nutrition. We share information about healthy food choices and discuss these with children within our programme.

At our kindergarten:

  • We grow our own produce in our harvest garden (e.g. herbs, vegetables)
  • We accommodate diverse dietary requirements
  • We practise and emphasise food safety
  • We work sensitively with parents and families from a range of cultural backgrounds to ensure cultural foods meet food standard requirements
  • We offer progressive snack and lunch time to empower children to ask for what they want and when.
Family and community

We love it when parents get involved! We actively support partnerships with families to help the children develop a sense of belonging and connectivity which aids in their social and emotional development.

We celebrate significant cultural festivals and days together. Parents are also invited in to talk to the children about their job, hobbies or other interesting topics.

We have a Parent Partnership Group which helps us with fundraising. Positions are elected at the annual meeting of our kindergarten parents.

Languages

Learning Languages Program

In 2019 the Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET), introduced the Early Childhood Language Program incorporating Language Learning in some Kindergartens across Victoria.

We are pleased to share that Uniting was successful in obtaining funding to introduce the Mandarin Language Program at St. Andrew’s Uniting Kindergarten Sunbury. The program will continue through until December 2022.

At St. Andrew’s Sunbury, Mandarin is incorporated into everyday learning experiences to give children meaningful opportunities to use the language themselves. Children learn this language through play, art, music, singing, dancing, and stories.

A qualified Mandarin teacher delivers the language program in partnership with the other staff at the kinder.

Learning in languages other than English helps children to improve their overall literacy and understanding of how language in general works.

Education experts have found that there are many benefits to children learning in another language at a young age, including:

  • increased literacy
  • cognitive flexibility
  • bolstering self-esteem and wellbeing
  • strengthened cultural identity

We are fortunate to have staff who speak Afrikaans in addition to English. We can have forms of communication translated and interpreted for families who speak languages other than English. Important information for parents and families is displayed prominently in our foyer.

Special services

We welcome all children to our centre, and we have a strong focus on supporting families with diverse backgrounds who may have a range of needs.

Our educators are equipped with the skills to provide safe and nurturing environments to all children and are experienced in working with children who attend with a range of abilities including children who have experienced challenges and trauma. We will work with your family to meet your child’s needs.
