At Melton Uniting Kindergarten, we believe in creating opportunities for children to grow and learn together.

Our dedicated and passionate educators provide a high level of care and nurturing to children while preparing them for their first year of primary school.

Our beautiful centre was established in 1973 and is located together with Melton Uniting Church at the rear side of Melton Valley Golf Club, a short walk to Melton Primary School.remove first bullet.

To showcase our facility we have created a 3-D Virtual Tour with a dollshouse view and a highlight reel.

The children at our kindergarten love being outdoors participating in activities that improve their motor skills. They enjoy riding trikes along the bike path, digging in the dirt patch, playing ball sports on the grassed area and planting and picking vegetables in the garden beds. We have a large outdoor playground with plenty of shade, and there are several planted areas including our tractor tyre veggie patch and Indigenous rock garden.

Learning Experiences

We have plenty of fun activities to satisfy children’s inquisitive minds! We place a strong emphasis on spending time outdoors, learning about sustainable practices and getting our hands dirty in the garden. Children at our centre develop strong relationships with the environment and local community through our activities and initiatives, such as walking excursions to the local primary school.

We actively promote sustainable living and encourage children to develop everyday sustainable practices via activities such as recycling and composting.

We organise many fun and informative workshops with visitors and special guests including:

Responsible Pet Ownership Program

  • Museum Outreach Program
  • Western Water
  • Police officer visit
  • Local Bunnings Gardening Workshop
  • Wurrundjeri Land Council education session

We also participate in the Healthy Early Childhood Services Achievement Program.

Health and wellbeing

We help children develop healthy eating habits early on in life. We encourage them to take an active role in their food preparation through tending to the herb, vegetable and fruit gardens. Our centre can accommodate all dietary requirements, and we work closely with families on health and nutrition.

  • We grow our own produce in our garden including herbs, vegetables, and fruit
  • We accommodate diverse dietary requirements
  • We practise and emphasise food safety
  • We work sensitively with parents and families from a range of cultural backgrounds to ensure cultural foods meet standard requirements
  • We offer progressive snack and lunchtime to empower children to ask for what they want and when
  • We educate children and their families about healthy eating and nutrition

Family and community

Community is at the heart of everything we do! We encourage families and the local community to take an active role in our students’ early learning journey. Through a number of channels and initiatives, parents and community members can participate in everything from fundraising and social events to having their say through the Parent Advisory Committee.

Parents can participate when:

  • We celebrate significant cultural festivals and days together
  • We invite them to talk to the children about their job, hobbies and other interesting topics
  • They volunteer their time to provide support and resources for our programs
  • They assist with fundraising
  • We have a Parent Partnership Group (positions are elected at the annual meeting of our kindergarten parents)
  • Caring for our pets over weekends and holidays

Various people, groups or services within our community we engage with regularly:

  • Local primary school
  • Local library
  • Museums
  • Local emergency service providers and medical professionals
  • Indigenous community members or groups
  • Animal trainers and handlers
  • Local church
  • Our neighbouring playgroup
  • Local council

We are fortunate to have staff who speak Mandarin and Punjabi in addition to English.

We can also provide formal and informal interpreter services with families as needed and translate and provide information in various languages of our community including Arabic, Vietnamese and Turkish.

Our educators are equipped with the skills to provide safe and nurturing environments to all children and are experienced in working with children who live with a range of physical and intellectual disability.
